Sri Lanka Bangladesh ties in a nutshell

Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were formally established in 1972 and the Sri Lanka High Commission in Bangladesh was set up in June 1979.In addition to the Mission in Dhaka, an Honorary Consul functions from Chittagong. All Sri Lanka Heads of States and Governments since 1979 have made official visit to Bangladesh. Prime Minister Kalida Zia visited Sri Lanka in January 1995.President Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, then President of Sri Lanka made a reciprocal state visit to Bangladesh in March 1995.

  • Shipping Agreement on 07 November 1979
  • Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement on 19 December 1992
  • Air service Commercial Agreement on 19 December 1992
  • Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation set up in February 1985

Actions are being taken to update some of the above agreements to suit present needs of the two countries.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are prominent members of regional organizations such as SAARC, BIMSTEC, IORAC, Asia Cooperation Dialog  CERDEP etc. and world bodies like the UN, NAM and Commonwealth etc. and share many commonalties. Both countries have not only fostered good bilateral relations but also shares similar views on many regional and global issues in the international arena.

Lankan professionals approximately 2500 to 3500 are working in Dhaka and Chittagong especially in the fields of garment, freight forwarding, banking medicine, information technology and telecommunication manufacturing, logistics, education, telecommunication, IT and health sectors.
Being a strategic port and a regional trading hub Bangladesh is an important trading partner to Sri Lanka. Easy access and Low cost of labour compared to the other countries in the region have helped Bangladesh to gain popularity as a reliable supply source among the Sri Lankan businessmen.

Many Bangladeshi companies in their phase of extending activities to overseas have identified Sri Lanka as another destination to setup their branches, manufacturing plants etc. There are also Bangladeshi companies that have engaged in the construction industry and other infrastructure development projects.

Donation of Hair Relic of Buddha in 2007 strengthened ties of Buddhists in both countries who follow Theravada Buddhism.
Sri Lanka appreciated political developments in Bangladesh bringing an elected government into power which paved the way for political and economic stability.

Bangladesh government provides Military Training to Sri Lanka Defence staff in diversified fields since long time.
The Sri Lankan students currently numbering over 500 who are enrolled in Bangladesh government and private medical colleges are on the increase annually.

Bangladesh praised Sri Lanka for eliminating terrorism and supported Sri Lanka at the United Nations.
